The book is illustrated with 13 colour steel engravings by Leech, captioned and printed on card stock. There are also 68 in-text wood engravings and large humours initials. ROBERT SMITH SURTEES (1805-1864) was hugely popular novelist in his day and is still very readable. He is often compared to Dickens and considered his superior in describing the natural world. Scuffing to spine ends. Corners wear. Front fixed endpaper has the initial "S" pasted down (1 x 1 inch). The tissue guard over the frontis has tears and small spots. The frontis and another colour plate have small marks in margins only. Contents complete and otherwise very good. Binding tight and square.
