First Canadian edition in a dust jacket. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone of detective fiction. 319 pages. The novel introduced series character Tommy Hambledon but the centre stage is occupied by a young British spy whose adventures were based on the life of one of the two collaborators, Cyril Coles, who was the youngest intelligence officer in the history of the British Secret Service. It's a grim, realistic spy story set during World War I framed within an inverted detective story. The book is tightly bound. Dust jacket is chipped and scuffed along the edges. The page edges are browned; internally the book is clean free of markings and foxing.
