First edition. Possibly more accurately a "first thus"; the same title was published four years earlier, but this edition removes a large number of the original chapters and adds six new ones, which surely qualifies as too drastic a change to be considered as a mere revision of the original, at any rate, the publisher chooses to make no mention of the earlier book so despite the title and author being the same I hesitate to call it a "Second edition". An entertaining collection of tales of military and colonial life in a variety of locations, spanning Europe, Asia and Africa. The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's grey/green cloth, lettered and illustrated in gilt and black; the extremities are bumped, there are some minor marks, the spine is faded and has some minor loss to the cloth at the ends. The text block is toned, dusty and slightly foxed with a neatly written inscription to the half-title page and cracking at points, to the rear is a 32-page catalogue dated October 1884.
